Does a business need a bookkeeper?

For the most part a small business owner may think they—or a family member—can handle the bookkeeping. You may be doing it yourself to save money, or because you distrust others with your sensitive financial records, but after considering that your time is extremely valuable, the true cost of DIY bookkeeping may be higher than you think. The fact of the matter is that not only does a business need a bookkeeper, every business needs BOTH the expertise of a skilled bookkeeper AND an accountant.

What's the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

  • A qualified bookkeeper is someone who uses accounting software to maintain accurate financial records and prepare financial statements. The primary difference between a bookkeepers and an accountant is that a bookkeeper performs the detail-oriented, day-to-day data entry of recording receipts, managing accounts payable & receivable, reconciling all accounts, and numerous other timely transactions.

  • A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is someone who uses tax software to prepare and file tax returns. When taxes are due, accountants rely on bookkeepers to provide the necessary financial records to fill out the forms. Another difference is that CPAs apprise startup businesses—for tax liabilities and limitations—how to structure their organization, corporation, or partnership appropriately, and provide tax planning services to support its future success.

Can I afford to secure the services of Books Done Right?

Yes, absolutely! Books Done Right costs less per month than hiring an on-site to perform bookkeeping tasks.

  • Hiring a qualified bookkeeper as an employee is not a minimum wage position. He/she must have four crucial skills: a meticulous attention to detail, a thorough understanding of accounting principles, a solid foundation in cash/accrual accounting concepts, and highly trained in anti-fraud checks and balances.

  • Also, be prepared to pay a part-time, 20 hours/week, employee an average of $20/hr. ($1,750/mo.). Plus approximately $350/mo. for employee-related payroll taxes, and the cost of benefits such as: insurance, paid time off, as well as new equipment and/or software. Then, after training a new  bookkeeper, there's always the possibility of turnover expenses that cannot be recouped for years.

  • Furthermore, something you definitely cannot afford are costly mistakes made by an inexperienced bookkeeper who who doesn't understand your business, misclassifies transactions, and fails to regularly reconcile all pertinent accounts.
